Refinish or Replace? An Honest Look at Kitchen Cabinets

Refinishing cabinets costs a fraction of replacing them, and it changes a kitchen more than almost anything else you can do in a week. That does not make it the right answer every time. Here is the way we think about it on a walkthrough.

When Refinishing Is the Smart Call

If the boxes are solid, the doors close properly, and you like the layout, refinishing is usually the better value by a wide margin. You are paying for finish work rather than demolition, new boxes, new counters, and the weeks of kitchen downtime that come with all of it.

When It Is Not Worth It

If the boxes are water damaged, the hinges are pulling out of soft particle board, or the layout genuinely does not work for how you cook, a beautiful finish on a failing box is money spent twice. We will tell you that on the estimate rather than take the job.

Why the Prep Matters More Here Than Anywhere Else

Cabinets get touched constantly, with hands, water, and cooking grease. The difference between a cabinet job that lasts and one that chips in a year is entirely in the preparation. Stained and sealed cabinets need extra cleaning and sanding so the primer can bond, and we account for that in the estimate rather than discovering it halfway through.

Plan for Several Days, Not One

Most kitchens run several days because of the dry and cure time between coats. That is not slow work, it is the finish hardening properly. You will get a day-by-day plan in your proposal so you know exactly when the kitchen is usable again.

Sheen, and the Door Nobody Thinks About

• Satin and semigloss are the usual picks: they wipe clean and hold up to hands.
• Bring the doors into the conversation: front and interior doors are part of the same work, and a refinished front door is one of the cheapest curb appeal upgrades there is.
